Modern addictions

I’m not sure this thought is either original or interesting, but I want to share it nonetheless.  It seems that a new crop of addictions are beginning, but they aren’t entirely new, just different than their age old cousins.

We’ve been addicted to work, relationships, and escaping our reality for a long time, but now they are all virtualWe have virtual addictions.

Work - blackberries, etc. have made it almost impossible to not work outside the office on a regular basis.

Relationships - it’s now so easy to keep up (i.e. spy) on our friends or share random moments of our lives that I’m sure some people waste spend most of their day on facebook.

Escape - avatars, aliases, online forums, chat rooms and virtual worlds have made it easy to escape our reality and pretend to be something (or someone) we are not.

This is further evidence of blurring lines between what is virtual and what is “real”, and, in my opinion, supports the fact that there is no line between virtual and real.

File this under random thoughts.
