the gleaners and I

I watched The Gleaners and I this weekend.  It’s a French documentary about gleaning, which is defined as “Collecting unharvested crops from fields or obtaining unused agricultural products from farmers, processors, or retailers, usually for distribution to food banks and charitable feeding organizations.”

The Filmaker, Agnes Varda, interviews gleaners in the fields of France, becomes a gleaner and expands the old term of gleaning to include modern street people that live off of other people’s trash.  This film is very artfully done and inspired me to see gleaning (or the act of living off of other people’s trash) as more acceptable than before.  That, and it made me wonder if gleaning isn’t exactly what Tumblr (and more broadly the Internet) are all about.
