open source = a sense of something bigger

I was just thinking about the open source movement and why people actually contribute to it. I mean why do people invest time and energy in something that gives them nothing back - economically speaking? One explanation is that it actually does give each of us something back - we get connections, jobs, better services, etc.

There’s also the desire each of us has to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. A desire to matter. A desire to make a difference. A desire to be heard.

This is possibly much stronger than any economic incentive. Possibly.
