Pew Internet: Teens and Social Media →

Pew Internet has produced yet another invaluable study in helping us understand how the Internet is changing our society, this time focusing on Teens. I found this quote particularly interesting, seeing as it is counter to many current stereotypes:

“However, we have yet to see compelling evidence that these highly wired teens are abandoning offline engagement with extracurricular activities in favor of having more screen time. In fact, in many cases, those who are the most active online with social media applications like blogging and social networking also tend to be the most involved with offline activities like sports, music, or part-time employment.”

It’s hard to say that high Internet activity causes more offline activity, but the correlation is strong and shouldn’t be ignored. I found the same thing in my documentary on twitter.

I’m also wondering if the distinction between “offline” and “online” is a bit outdated and not something that teens understand or seek to distinguish.
